Shoujo Kakumei Utena Revolutionary Girl Utena. The girl who wanted to be a Prince. Anime by Be-PaPas. Manga by Chiho Saito. The 39 episode TV series penetrates the soul and confounds the spirit. It soars into the depths of your heart on rose petal wings and blossoms into a magnificent movie, Adolescence Utena that is an alternative universe of the television show's alternate universe, which is in turn an alternate universe of the manga's alternate universe, and vice versa. Instead of spouting forth the usual smarty-pants Herman Hesse/Franz Kafka/Soren Kierkegaard references in illuminating the key themes in Utena, lately, I've been finding it more apropos to quote an unexpected source like William James, the older brother of stuffy American novelist Henry James: "All the higher, more penetrating ideals are revolutionary. They present themselves far less in the guise of effects of past experience than in that of probable causes of future experience." Despite how disturbing it might be to some to quote William and/or Henry James, I find these unexpected treasures both insightful and inciteful. Truth, like pain, gives of it's healing power when we least expect it. The Student Council would have saved themselves a lot of grief if they'd have read their William James. But then, had they done so, we would naught be be so vastly entertained. La Fillette Revolutionaire I assume that most who read this have seen the series and know the details. If you haven't, The Utena Encyclopedia is a good place to get all the basic information you need. My Utena site, such as it is, is more for your enjoyment, bewilderment, bemusement and/or entertainment, than for any mundane or practical purpose. If I provide any actual information, well...it is no doubt the inadvertent result of my expressions of opinion. This site will examine some of the less obvious metaphorical layers. And will also call into question the posturing of Revolution within the show. The very idea that some of the poofters in this show are REVOLUTIONIZING the World is tantamount to absurdity. To paraphrase and quote William James, the Duelists, especially the Student Council and Akio Ootori, are creating the illusion of a solid and real Revolution, "wholly out of impalpable materials, air, and the prismatic interference of light, ingeniously focused by mirrors upon empty space." James, was ofcourse describing his younger brother's writing style, but I think he's hit the nail on the noggin here. Many times during this series I've remarked to myself, "What is so damned revolutionary about all this?" It's contradiction that arises continuously in my mind throughout the show. Finally, we can't forget about Henry James The light he can pour upon Utena is quite poignant and perceptive. Henry James wrote in the preface to his novel What Maisie Knew: "No themes are so human as those that reflect for us, out of the confusion of life, the close connection of bliss and bale...." Utterly apropos!! It's as if he has peered out of the 19th century and watched every episode of Utena, like I have, in raw Japanese with no subtitles!! Amazing!! |
